Updated Fire Safety Guide for Contract Seating in Domestic Environments
The Furniture Industry Research Association has updated its guide for members, Fire Safety of Office Work Chairs in Domestic Environments. Originally developed in 2021 in collaboration with Trading Standards, the document has been revised to reflect the removal of the display label from the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations (FFFSR) as part of the October 2025 regulatory update.
The guide explains when the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 2025 apply in full and where the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR) may also apply. It is designed to help members understand their regulatory responsibilities under current UK legislation.
The updated guide examines four common scenarios: legacy chairs, contract chairs taken home, contract seating sold for domestic use, and chairs constructed entirely from, or incorporating, mesh components. It also includes summary guidance, clarification from TSO, information on permanent labels, example risk assessments, and insight into fire risk, ignition sources, and flammability performance.
The updated guide is available to FIRA members to download from the Knowledge Hub: Fire Safety of Office Work Chairs in Domestic Environments.
