Domestic flammability regulations are the focus of a new training session

A focus on the domestic flammability regulations is the fourth in a series of recorded training sessions developed by the Furniture Industry Research Association.

The ‘Introduction to the domestic flammability regulations’ was developed by Howard James, Operations Manager - Testing, at FIRA International (the service provider to the Furniture Industry Research Association). The session covers:

  • Why we have the flammability regulations and what they cover
  • Requirements of the regulations
  • Who is responsible for compliance
  • The tests – including ignition sources, schedules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, watersoaking,
  • Display labels

Speaking on the training, James said “There is no question that flammability generates the highest percentage of enquiries we receive, it is the most popular face-to-face training we host and has the most page views on our website. Therefore, it was an obvious choice to form part of the recorded training sessions we’ve developed for the Furniture Industry Research Association. There is some confusion which surrounds the Regulations, and we’re aiming to demystify some aspects of the Regulations through this training.

“Although there has been talk for some time about updating the regulations, which originally date back to 1988. The latest information we have from OPSS (Office for Product Safety and Standards) is that, due to COVID-19, any new regulations would not be ready until 2022 at the earliest. As such, the industry has to ensure they are compliant with the current regulations.”

The ‘Introduction to the domestic flammability regulations’ training session is available to members of the Furniture Industry Research Association here. A second flammability session, with a focus on the contract market, will be released by the Research Association shortly.

Further sessions available include:
