FIRA Flammability Forum – Summary Report for Members
The FIRA Flammability Consultation Forum, held on 14 May 2026 for its members, brought together a wide range of stakeholders from across the furniture and furnishings sector to examine and discuss the UK Government’s proposed reforms to fire safety regulations for domestic upholstered furniture.
The consultation forms part of a broader policy objective to maintain high levels of fire safety while reducing reliance on chemical flame retardants (FRs), reflecting growing environmental, health, and sustainability considerations. The proposed changes represent one of the most significant potential shifts in furniture flammability requirements in decades, prompting strong interest and engagement across the industry
The fully booked forum provided a valuable platform for collaborative discussion. Participants included manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, testing bodies, and other industry representatives, contributing a diverse range of perspectives and expertise.
Discussions focused on the four primary consultation proposals and played an important role in shaping FIRA’s collective industry response. By capturing a wide range of viewpoints, questions, and concerns, the session helped refine key positions and identify priority areas requiring further clarification or evidence.
A detailed summary report of the forum discussions and stakeholder feedback has been prepared and is available for members to download below.
