UK Government Industry Consultation on Digital Product Records

Many members may already be aware of the development of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). While these requirements will apply in Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework, businesses operating elsewhere in the UK will not be required to comply with the EU legislation.

The Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade is gathering views on digital product records to inform future policy development and understand the potential impacts for businesses, consumers and supply chains. 

The Call for Evidence on Digital Product Records (DPRs) is designed to gather evidence on whether a UK Digital Product Record policy could help streamline the provision of product information for businesses while enhancing transparency and traceability for consumers and market surveillance authorities. 

Information that could potentially be included within Digital Product Records includes product safety information, composition data, sustainability data and end-of-life guidance, including opportunities for refurbishment, repair, and reuse. Such measures could contribute to improved product circularity and support wider sustainability objectives.

It forms part of a wider government initiative to explore how the digitalisation of compliance processes can deliver benefits to both businesses and consumers.

We encourage all our Members to submit their own responses to ensure the views of the furniture sector are fully represented. This will help ensure that any future policies arising from the consultation support innovation and competitiveness while avoiding unnecessary administrative burdens on businesses.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 pm on 21 September 2026.
