Public consultation on Machinery Directive

This news article has been archived for reference only. It should not be relied upon for up-to-date information

A public consultation on the Machinery Directive has been published by DG GROW. The consultation can be accessed here alongside the Inception Impact Assessment. The feedback period runs until 30 August 2019. The adoption of the act (expected to be a Regulation) is planned for the first quarter of 2021.

The Commission considers that the Directive needs updating to improve safety levels further and take account of the latest IT innovations. According to the Commission, the proposed revision:

  • aligns the Directive with EU harmonised legislation on product health and safety, and
  • tackles the challenges that may arise from technical progress in digitisation
