OPS&S - Strengthening national capacity for product safety: Strategy 2018-2020

On Friday 6th of August BEIS new Office of Product Safety & Standards released their first eagerly awaited strategy document “Strengthening national capacity for product safety: Strategy 2018-2020”.

The Strategy acknowledges the UK’s traditional strength in areas of innovation in consumer goods and that our legal framework is one of the strongest in the world in relation to consumer products safety. It also makes reference to the government’s industrial strategy aims to create an economy that boosts productivity, provide the best environment to start and grow a business and ensure that the UK remains a great place for innovators & entrepreneurs. It also highlights the fact that development, delivery and enforcement of regulation play a critical role in ensuring the UK remains a competitive market with consumer protection at its heart.

The Strategy highlights the vision of the department for a “trusted product safety system that delivers protection for consumers, fairness for business and a competitive market place defined by outcomes of safety and public confidence” with action driven through 4 mutually enforcing objectives.
