New standard for office desking published

FIRA can announce that a new European Standard for office desking has been published. The standard: BS EN 527-2: 2016: Office furniture - Work tables - Part 2: Safety, strength and durability requirements replaces the 2002 edition, which has been withdrawn with immediate effect. It is anticipated that the standard will be published across Europe by June 2017 at the latest.

The key changes are:

  • Referencing test methods contained within the state of the art test method standard BS EN 1730: 2012 Tables. Test methods for the determination of stability, strength and durability, rather than the previous standard BS EN 527-3: 2013 (which will be withdrawn);
  • Inclusion of a test method for desks featuring electrical height adjustment;
  • Changing the shear and squeeze point requirements, such that there shall be no parts moving relative to each other where the gap is greater than 7 mm and less than 25 mm.
