Members Invited to Shape the Industry Response to UK Upholstered Furniture Flammability Reform

Following the launch of the Government’s latest consultation on UK flammability regulations for domestic upholstered furniture, the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) is hosting a dedicated member forum to support industry engagement and inform a coordinated response.

Event details

Date: 14 May 2026

Location: Fira-International Ltd, Stevenage

The forum will provide an opportunity for open discussion of the proposals, enabling members to share views, raise questions, and help refine FIRA's collective submission. Members are strongly encouraged to attend and to submit their own consultation responses alongside the industry response, ensuring their specific perspectives are fully represented.

The session will explore the four key consultation questions:

  • Introducing reformed furniture fire safety legislation based on a smoulder test and end open flame testing
  • Allowing composite, representative sample, or component testing for compliance
  • Regulating re-upholstery and repair under the General Product Safety Regulations
  • Regulating second-hand upholstered furniture under the same regulations

The day will be led by Fira-International experts Levent Caglar, Howard James, and Steve Cotton, who will provide insight into the proposals, offer guidance, and answer questions throughout the day.
