Government commission committee to undertake review of Shortage Occupation List
The Government have recently commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to undertake a review of the Shortage Occupation List (SOL). This list identifies skilled roles deemed to be in critically low supply in the UK labour market.
The list is particularly important where employers want to fill roles that are featured on the SOL, as the rules on hiring non‐UK and non‐EEA employees under general visas are relaxed.
The list is regularly reviewed, with the last being undertaken approximately 5 years ago. The Committee have confirmed that this review of the Shortage Occupations List it taking into consideration current context, and not he UK’s exit from the EU.
As the Government is due to publish a White Paper on the future immigration system in the autumn, please ensure that any response and evidence is based on experience within the current immigration system
Any members interested in assisting in this project can use the following form to 'MAC Review of the Shortage Occupation List” to submit any evidence directly to the Migration Advisory Committee. Further details on the information and evidence required is included on this document.
The form includes questions on the reasons for job shortages, measures taken to reduce shortages and a request for detailed description of occupations. The Committee would also like industry to confirm whether occupations listed on the Shortage Occupation List are still relevant, why these are important and if these should remain on the list.
The current list itself can be found at the following link: https://onsdigital.github.io/dp-classification-tools/standard-occupational-classification/ONS_SOC_occupation_coding_tool.html
The site has an easy to use search function
