Four new European Standards approved
October has seen a flurry of activity in the European Standards committees. Four revised standards have received positive results at the Formal Vote stage. This means the documents will be published as British Standards within the next 6 months.
FIRA has been involved in the development of all the standards, and has copies of the text submitted for approval. Whilst the standards may change slightly editorially before publication, they will not change technically. FIRA can therefore assess your products against the approved Standards now to help ensure that your product will be suitable for use, as defined by the standard. The current versions of all these standards will be withdrawn when the revised standards are published.
The standards in question are:
FprEN 12520:2015 Furniture - Strength, durability and safety – Requirements for domestic seating
Here the changes are minimal, reflecting an update of the test method standard for seating – EN 1728: 2012.
FprEN 12521 Furniture - Strength, durability and safety – Requirements for domestic tables
Here the changes are minimal, reflecting an update of the test method standard for tables – EN 1730: 2012.
EN 1729-2:2012/FprA1 - Furniture - Chairs and tables for educational institutions - Part 2: Safety requirements and test methods
In this amendment the changes are again minimal, reflecting the updates of the test method standards for seating and tables – EN 1728: 2012 & EN 1730: 2012.
FprEN 14749 - Furniture - Domestic and kitchen storage units and kitchen-worktops - Safety requirements and test methods
Here some of the changes are more significant. As well as reflecting the publication of a new test method standard for storage – EN 16122: 2012 – new test methods are included for units that support heavy items (such as refrigerators and washing machines) and a stability test for TV units.
