Customer counter recognised for ergonomic excellence
The reach of FIRA’s Ergonomics Excellence Award has now been extended to include customer counters, as Ideas Ltd have received the award for their ‘Inclusive, modular ticket sales counters’. What makes the award of this product so unique is that the ergonomic excellence of both staff and consumers were taken into account during design and use; and the needs of both groups of users vary dramatically.
Speaking on the Ergonomics Excellence Award, Levent Caglar, Senior Ergonomist at FIRA International said, “The inclusive, customer counter system from Ideas Ltd was a very interesting product to assess. We had to consider ergonomics excellence from two perspectives, one being the staff member who would be spending a large proportion of their day at the counter, then customers, who although may only be at the counter for a matter of minutes, would all have different needs.
“There were a number of standout features of the counter design which lead to the presentation of the award. The modular design, incorporating dual height counters enable customers who are standing, or seated in a wheelchair, to use the same counter. Whilst the U-shape design, which is non-handed, allows staff to configure the counter to their own preferences on reach, viewing distance, knee clearance etc. For all these reasons Ideas Ltd were a standout choice for the FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award.”

Our counters are installed in many facilities, such as ticket offices, and during design we were all too aware of the complexity of such workspaces, as they require high levels of safety, security and comfort for staff and customers.
“Creating an ergonomic solution was always front-of-mind, and we’ve worked closely with Network Rail to produce a set of design guidelines for ticket counters to be implemented across their network.”
