Our highly qualified ergonomists provide services to all sectors of the furniture industry – to assist with the integration of ergonomics into design and purchase solutions, maximising the comfort, safety and efficiency of their products, minimising risk - and clearly differentiating their products in the marketplace.

The services we provide include:

  • Furniture specification, development and evaluation
  • Our ergonomists advise and assist on furniture specification, workstation efficiency and workplace layout for all types of educational, leisure, work and domestic environments. We can give advice on how to specify furniture that is fit for purpose for an organisation. This is not only the list of standards that it should comply with but also what type of chair or work surface should be specified, the size, dimensions etc. This is based on the requirements of the task, office, organisations, individual and environment.

  • Health & Safety and DSE regulations assessments
  • Compliance of office, school and domestic furniture, equipment and work environments with Health & Safety and DSE (Display Screen Equipment) regulations.

  • Advisory and testing services for designers and manufacturers
  • Our ergonomists have designed conducive surroundings within work, leisure and educational environments. FIRA is extremely well placed to offer product designers and manufacturers whatever ergonomic assistance they require to optimise their products, comply with British and European Standards, avoid product failures - and also differentiate their products from those of their competitors. We can our support to meet your specific needs.

  • Ergonomics Standards testing and dimensional testing
  • There are a number of British (BS), European (EN) and international (ISO) Standards relating to ergonomics of products in use, mainly for the office, contract and educational markets.

    These Standards are mainly dimensional Standards for office and educational environments. A vast majority of office and contract furniture users will not purchase office chairs and tables unless they have been tested and certified by an independent third party.

  • Assessment of products for liability and risk
  • In addition to testing for compliance with appropriate standards, we can also assess products for liability and risk and advise on design improvements to increase safety.

  • Product user trials
  • We conduct user trials or use expert check lists, which are developed in house, on a wide variety of products from pushchairs through to iPad holders. These user findings allow feedback which enables the design to be improved.

  • Assessments of Workplace compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act
  • Ensuring workplace compliance with all aspects of the Disability Discrimination Act; this includes access audits and verification of compliance using BS 8300:2001

  • FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award
  • We evaluate products for the FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award. This award recognises companies who design and manufacture ergonomically outstanding products, especially those that meet and generally exceed the requirements of British and European Standards.
