Club Green

Companies enjoy the sustainable benefits of Club Green

FIRA’s environmental initiative, Club Green, now has over 100 members.
These companies enjoy a wide range of benefits which help them to become more competitive and sustainable yet, at the same time, reducing their environmental impact.

Environmental management covers a wide range of issues such as timber purchasing, energy use, solvent use, packaging and wood waste. Work in the furniture sector has shown how much variation between companies exists with regards to key issues.
For example, a survey of 72 manufacturers showed that the cost of wood waste varied from <1% of turnover up to 10%, with an average of 5%. If the worst performer had reduced its waste to the industry average, it would have enjoyed a bottom line benefit equivalent to a 50% increase in sales. This benefit would have accrued year after year.

Club Green has been helping companies to improve their environmental impacts for the past decade. Other key areas of action have been to help members:

  • Understand legislation such as the packaging regulations and the changes to the process guidance notes
  • Understand their key environmental impacts and how these could be better managed
  • Benchmark their environmental performance through annual site audits

Club Green recognises that companies need a flexible service which suits the changing needs of the organisation. Therefore, membership is available at a number of levels:

Stage 1 : information provision through a sector specific guide to environmental legislation which is updated regularly. Members also receive a quarterly newsletter as well as regular forums. This level of membership is typically useful for companies just starting to systematically manage environmental issues as well as for those at the other end of the spectrum which require a register of legislation for their certified environmental management system

Stage 2 : all of the benefits of Stage 1 with the addition of an on-site review and the provision of a Club Green certificate for those companies which demonstrate a genuine commitment to environmental management.
