Process improvement workshop
The entry point for embracing lean thinking within the workplace is to undertake a process Improvement workshop (PIW). This hands on activity involves all relevant members from the organisation working with a master engineer on a set of activities which address the processes in one area of the business. The area is not restricted and the workshop could take place in a production area, the despatch department or even the sales office. By introducing new ways of looking at things, and following the process until well after new practices are established, it is possible to deliver substantial, sustainable changes. It is recognised that the operational and financial constraints of small businesses mean that a full process improvement workshop (PIW) might not be suitable. The smaller business (typically 2 – 70 people) workshop is, therefore, designed to be more affordable and takes account of the fact that senior personnel are unable to leave the workplace for extended periods of time.
The principles are the same as a PIW and the level of commitment required is the same. However, the time requirements and numbers of people involved often enables more rapid progress of the process.
