Lean manufacturing

Lean Manufacturing

Lean manufacturing is an often used and frequently misunderstood term. ‘Lean manufacture’ addresses processes within a business area and identifies where things can be made more efficient.

Examples include:

  • the time taken to process order paperwork in the sales office, the amount of time
  • raw materials sitting waiting to be processed
  • the size of batches produced
  • the physical layout of production areas
  • serviceability of equipment
  • the number of times an item is transported

To become truly lean, manufacturers must look beyond their own processes and work with others in the supply chain to ensure the right materials are delivered to the right place at the right time.

Lean manufacturing involves everybody within an organisation.
