Ergonomics for consumers

Ergonomics is concerned with the design of objects, systems and environments for human use based on scientific knowledge of human beings. It affects everything where people are involved including furniture, work systems, sports, leisure, health and safety.

ergonomics

The design and manufacture of much of our furniture at work takes account of ergonomic principles. It could be argued that these principles have found less favour in the domestic sector. However, the introduction of the home office, plus improvements in beds, mattresses and chairs, have all contributed to a greater application of ergonomics to consumer products.

The following articles provide general guidance on ergonomics and furniture:

  • How to choose an office chair?
  • How to choose domestic furniture?
  • Ergonomics in the home

More detailed information is available within the ergonomics section of the askFIRA web site.
