BS EN 747 Part 1 & 2 Furniture – Bunk Beds for domestic use
A 2007 revision of the 1993 standard has now been published across Europe, but the UK has yet to publish the standard due to safety concerns.
In particular the UK is concerned about a requirement that allows the sides of a bunk bed to taper. This could lead to an entrapment point between the top safety barriers and a wall.
The UK is obliged to publish the standard, and BSI is currently formulating a National Foreword for the standard that will bring this problem to the attention of the user. However there are some problems with the wording which is delaying publication; once these are resolved the standard will be published.
