A collection of furniture was the second biggest lot in the auction of James Brown memorabilia held in New York yesterday.
Over 300 lots went under the hammer in the sale handled by Christies, and despite awards, costumes and many personal effects being on offer, only an embroidered black cape outsold the furniture set, which sold for $40,000.
This comprised of a suite of upholstered seating covered in a ribbed buttoned red leather: a 91 inch three-seat sofa, a 63 inch two-seat loveseat, and a 32 inch single-seat armchair and matching ottoman.
The flamboyant singer - dubbed the Godfather of Soul - died of heart failure on Christmas Day 2006. The auction raised $857,000.
