Russian television has reported that a St Petersburg woman killed her drunk husband by kicking the handle of a fold away sofa bed.
The woman was upset her husband was inebriated and had refused to get up, and during an argument lashed out at the sofa's mechanism with her foot, causing it to fold up vertically against a wall.
The man fell between the mattress and the back of the sofa, and died instantly after having broken his back, according to emergency services. The woman raised the alarm when she returned to the room three hours later, having assumed her husband was asleep.
Channel 5 TV in Russia showed the rescue effort, with side panels of the sofa being removed to show the man in his underwear lying headfirst between the cushions.
A Lincolnshire man has been jailed for two years for causing the death of a motorcyclist after a sofa fell from the back of his van. Peterborough Crown Court heard how Anthony Barnes had loaded his Mitsubushi Triton pickup but did not secure the sofa properly, causing it to fall into the inside lane of the A1139 dual carriageway last June. Darren Wildman ploughed into the back of the Triton when he was forced to take evasive action to avoid the sofa, and was killed instantly. Barnes had denied the charge during the five day trial. The recruitment company director has also been banned from driving for two years. Judge Sean Enright told Barnes: "I watched you very carefully during the trial and watched what you said. I do find your expression of remorse in the pre-sentence report a little hollow. In my view Mr Wildman was riding his bike responsibly and demonstrated concern for others that you did not".
