School furniture debate prompts media calls to FIRA
The Daily Express kick started the debate with a story headlined 'Bigger desks for UK's fat children', which was loosely based on research conducted by FIRA and the British Educational Suppliers Association [the research actually showed children have grown by 1cm and are heavier than they were a generation ago]. The Daily Mail then followed up with an even more exaggerated headline, 'Schools forced to buy reinforced chairs and taller tables to cope with oversized children', in which Levent was quoted at length. It is worth noting this story appeared on April 1, and the BBC news website called to ask FIRA if this story was genuine - it even ran a page showing '10 stories that could be April Fool's...but aren't'. The Daily Telegraph were next in touch, again quoting Levent, before the BBC's flagship children's news programme, Newsround, phoned to plan an interview, and Radio 4 interviewed him. |
