Important standards update for office seating manufacturers

BS 5459-2, the British Standard for Office Task Chairs for 24 hour use, and use by persons weighing up to 150 kg, has been amended. Amendment A2 has just been issued.

The amendment deals with two areas that clarify testing requirements.

The first amendment states that all stability, safety and durability tests should be carried out with, wherever possible, the seat height adjusted to its maximum height. This means that the chair is subjected to the most stringent testing regime possible.

In most cases chairs will have been tested with the seats adjusted to this position, however any manufacturer who has had their products tested to BS 5459-2: 2000 and is concerned as to whether this change will affect their test results, they should contact their test house.

The second amendment  deals with dimensions of a piece of the test apparatus and will not affect any test results.
