The Ribbon Rocking Chair by Katie Walker Furniture scooped a win double at the Grand Designs Awards on Friday, picking up the prizes for both Best Furniture Product and the overall Best Product.
Sponsored by The Furniture Ombudsman, the Best Furniture Product award was presented by Kevin McCloud, presenter of Channel 4’s Grand Designs at the Grand Designs Live event at the ExCeL arena in London’s Docklands. The £4,000 Ribbon chair, featuring a leather seat and an ash frame, beat off competition from the £1,200 Frank Desk by John Slater and the Hardwood Wingback Lounge Chair by James Design UK.
The panel of six judges said of West Sussex-based Katie Walker’s creation: “A lovely choice of materials; the design achieved a nice tension between components. A beautiful and memorable piece”.
The chair was then chosen ahead of winners in the Kitchen, Bathroom, Lighting and Interior Styling categories as overall Grand Designs Best Product
The Furniture Ombudsman Head of Service, Rhianwen Roberts, said: “Katie’s success was richly deserved in the Best Furniture Product category, but to beat off competition from all other product categories is an outstanding achievement. We are delighted to be associated with her success, and that of the highly respected Grand Designs brand”.
