New law to affect US wood importers

A new US law coming into effect on 15 December will require all importers of plant products, including wood, to meet certain requirements regarding its origin.

From that date importers must submit a declaration which includes the genus and species of the plant used, its value and quantity, and the country from where it was sourced.

The Farm Bill’s scope is very broad, as it applies to ‘any wild member of the plant kingdom, including roots, seeds, parts and products thereof’. Although not precisely defined, covered products will certainly include wood/wood-based furniture, as well as items such as cookware, textiles and clothing.
