Standards meeting update for office furniture.

The British Standards committee responsible for office furniture, FW0/3, recently met in London to establish the UK position on issues to be raised at a forthcoming meeting of CEN TC207 WG3, the European committee responsible for office furniture standards.

The committee decided

  • To revise EN 1335-1, Office chair dimensions, to reflect the new ISO chair measurement device
  • To consider revising EN 1335-2, Office chair structural requirements, to overcome the loading point issue and to possibly reference the new test method standard prEN 1728 (and thus withdraw EN 1335-3)
  • To consider revising EN 527-2, Office desk structural requirements, to possibly reference the new test method standard prEN 1730 (and thus withdraw EN 527-3)
  • To consider revising EN 14073-2, Office storage safety requirements, to possibly reference the new test method standard prEN 16122 (and thus withdraw EN 14073-3 and EN 14074)

If the decisions to revise a number of European Standards for office furniture is accepted, then this will have a major effect on the industry, not least re-testing. However due to the timescales involved, if revisions go ahead they will be at least three years away.
