Standards meeting update for children's and nursery furniture
The European working group responsible for children's and nursery furniture, CEN TC207 WG2, recently met in London to discuss an amendment to the standards for cots (EN716-1, requirements and EN 716-2, test methods).
The working group recommended that the proposed amendments to the two standards are sent for the Formal Vote procedure, the last step before being published. It is therefore likely that these amendments will be published before the end of 2012.
The proposed amendments could have a significant effect on cot manufacturers/retailers.
Firstly the amendments will require that product is re-tested to check compliance to the revised requirements.
Secondly, and more importantly products may need to be re-designed as the allowable distance between the floor and the cot base has been reduced from 200 mm to 100 mm. This reduces the entrapment risk for children outside the cot, and brings the standard in line with the standard for playpens, EN 12227: 2010.
