Michael Powell - Chairman of The FIRA Council

My initial career was in mechanical engineering and my involvement with the furniture industry began 1973. At that time, I joined a Hardex Fittings Ltd agents and stockists for a number of European manufacturers of furniture components, I was appointed to the board in 1976. In 1987I joined Blum as Managing Director of the newly formed subsidiary Julius Blum UK Ltd. In 1991, we bought land in Milton Keynes and moved the business in 1992 from London to Milton Keynes. Outgrowing our premises, in 2002, we purchased a 3-acre site and constructed a new headquarters office and fully automated warehouse. I have become an expert on building and relocating businesses as I have overseen three construction developments and four relocations. I retired from Blum UK at the end of February 2010.

Married to Helen and live in a converted pumping station in Hadley Green situated in Barnet, which is the northernmost London borough.

I am a Freeman of the City of London and court member of the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers a city Livery company. I sit on the charity and events committee involved in organising a number of events throughout the year. Enjoy fine dining, wine and socialising therefore I am a regular at my local gym, although looking at me it is not obvious.
