What is ergonomics?

When something is designed using ergonomic principles, it means that that it has been through a process which understands human anatomy, biomechanics, physiology and psychology to ensure that the finished item offers the user optimum safety and comfort. Therefore, by having an office chair which has been awarded FIRA Ergonomics Excellence, you are sitting on a chair that will safeguard your future well being if it is used properly.

To find out how to get the most out of your chair, spend a few minutes looking at the user instructions and adjust the chair to suit you. Please select a chair to view instructions:

About FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award

The Furniture Industry Research Association is a unique, 60 year old organisation that offers research and commercial services to and on behalf of the furniture industry, from testing furniture to after sales repair.

FIRA award schemes are recognised as a valuable evaluation aid by manufacturers and buyers alike.

The Ergonomics Excellence Award recognises companies who design and manufacture ergonomically outstanding products, especially those that meet and exceed the requirements of British and European testing standards.  Ergonomically excellent products are likely to improve efficiency and productivity as well as eliminating or minimising the ill effects of twenty first century offices and work practices.   They are also likely to reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD's) as well as the absence due to MSD's.

For a product to earn this award it must fulfill the following criteria:

    • Excellent ergonomic qualities

    • Designed according to appropriate ergonomic criteria

    • User friendly

    • Promote comfort and well being for the user

    • Fit for purpose both ergonomically and structurally

    • User safety
