Benefits of Standardisation

- When variability occurs due to lack of a standard, a standard must be introduced and maintained. By ensuring that there is a standard with a measurable cost, it is possible to understand what the true cost of production is.

- Understanding the standardized work content allows the elements of work within the process to be identified as Value-adding, Non-value adding and waste.

- Having no standard, or not following the defined standard, often leads to abnormal conditions. The presence of a standard operation allows these abnormal conditions to be identified clearly and effectively countermeasures.

- As the Value-adding and non value-adding elements of work can be easily identified and displayed, it becomes easier to identify opportunities for improvement.

- Without the presence of standards, there is no way of knowing whether improvements have been made. Where there is no standard, it is very difficult to identify opportunities for improvement as the current situation is continually changing.

- Standardised work ensures that a task can be performed in the same time every time, achieving the same quality levels, in a safe manner irrespective of the differences between people e.g. left handed and right handed people.
